The artist will carry cinder blocks through the space to build large structures throughout. Each Build day is dedicated to a black woman/trans woman who lost their life and voice to a senseless act of violence and policing. This Build Day is dedicated to Shantel Davis.

Day 5 Recap

Pain is Universal. Joy is Universal.

I’ve had several conversations with people as I build. While this action has been more of a meditative practice where I reflect on pain and the proper way to release this pain, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with many people that have had to come to terms with their own traumas within the space. This has taught me the power of art. The power to share an experience, the power of sharing pain and ultimately sharing joy.

Do you remember the last time you cried? Who was there to comfort you? Was it through a hug? Through words to affirm? A simple hand held? I believe we can work on creating a better life for others and for our self when we become vulnerable to connection. I am so thankful for the connections I have made with each person I’ve met in the past few days. Thank you for sharing your own stories of pain. Thank you for sharing tears with me. Thank you for the hugs - the embrace. Thank you for existing with me.

We are all capable of love. We are also all capable of life. A life that is lived in love. Although we all deal with pain, we have to remember that we will also always find joy at the end of the day becuase joy is universal.

With love.
